The Dynamic Neuroscreening Device (DND) is non-invasive and is used to detect peripheral neuropathy in patients with diabetes or at risk for diabetes who have yet to exhibit any clinical symptoms and can also establish a patient baseline for future screening. Nerve damage begins in early stages of diabetes. The DND screens for the presence of neuropathy through the use of objective temperature and vibration sensitivity testing.

Medical Necessity

Peripheral neuropathy is one of the major causes of sensation loss and significantly increases risk of feet ulceration with potential limb loss. Alarmingly, up to 50% of diabetic neuropathy patients may not have subjective complaints.

Device Objective

Uniform patients screening for peripheral fiber neuropathy by graded temperature and vibration discrimination stimuli. The device will standardize physical examination by medical professionals.

Design and Methods

Physician conceived and designed non-invasive screening device to objectively grade possible earliest signs of small and large fiber dysfunction. The device will screen for small fiber vitality by patients ability to discriminate 2 ' C temperature changes from 15 ' C to 40 ' C , compared to the fixed 25 ' C baseline. Large fiber health is screened by 5 amplitudes of vibration at a frequency that emulates a standard tuning fork.

Benefits

The device establishes objective peripheral neuropathy screening across medical specialties and helps to overcome a difference in medical professionals examination technique. The device helps to follow longitudinal changes in patients health. The device may significantly improve patients compliance with medical advice by providing objective numerical data of the sensitivity status.

The onset of peripheral neuropathy develops over a long period of time. The DND allows the physician to screen and establish a patient baseline for at risk patients that can be monitored over subsequent foot exams. Degradation of the patient’s baseline provides the physician with the earliest opportunity to aggressively treat the disease. Patient participation increases drastically with the DND as understandable real time feedback is provided. Typically, as a patient loses vibration and temperature sensation in the diabetic foot, they can still discern the differences in their hands. This sends a powerful signal to the patient that they need to follow the doctor’s prescribed treatment regimen.
